You can reach Phuket from Bangkok in several ways: by plane, express bus, or by train with a bus connection. Plane tickets start at around $25, but during low season you can find deals from $6. The flight takes about 1 hour 25 minutes.
Express buses run for 12 to 14 hours to cover the 850 km between Bangkok and Phuket, and prices start at $22. Depending on the class and operator, tickets can cost up to $35 or more, but most rides offer a comfortable seat and AC for a reasonable fare. Train + bus journeys take about 16 hours, and combined tickets start at $35.
If you prefer to sleep through most of the journey, the express bus might suit you well. It usually travels overnight and takes between 12 and 14 hours. Please remember that Thai buses often keep the air conditioning on at full blast — consider packing a hoodie for the trip. The train offers another overnight option, but you’ll need to change to a bus in the morning to reach Phuket. To avoid delays, it’s best to book a combined train and bus ticket in advance.
If you don’t book your ticket ahead of time, there’s a risk that buses or trains will be fully booked — especially during weekends or public holidays. Flights work the same way — it’s best to book early, especially if you’re traveling on weekends or during holiday seasons. Last-minute seats may not be available, even on popular routes.
