Istanbul Airport: Transfers and Taxi
Transfers from Istanbul Airport
There are two air hubs serving Istanbul. New Airport is the main one — it is located in the European part of Istanbul, on the Black Sea coast, approximately 45 kilometers from the city center. Sabiha Gokcen air hub is located in the Asian part of the city, around 50 kilometers from downtown — it handles mainly low-cost and charter flights.
Private transfers are the most comfortable and stress-free option to reach different districts in the city, as well as nearby Turkish resorts. Here are the major benefits of using this travel option:
The driver will take you directly to your destination without making any unnecessary stops on the way. You won’t have to wait for him: when your flight arrives, he’ll already be waiting for you at the designated meeting point inside the terminal.
You will be traveling in comfort. We offer a variety of car classes, so you can pick the most comfortable one for you: whether you’re a solo traveler, a family with children, or a big group of tourists, you’ll find the perfect option for you (by the way, finding a large vehicle on-site might not be easy). You can add child restraints to your order if you travel with children. All our vehicles are air-conditioned and not older than 7 years.
You won’t face the language barrier. Most public transport and taxi drivers in Turkey don’t speak English. With us, you won’t have to explain anything to your driver, as we’ll send him all the trip details in advance.
It will cost you 33 euros to reach your hotel in the central part of the city from any of these air hubs. The ride will take around 1 hour and 15 mins from New air hub, and 1 hour and 20 mins from Sabiha Gokcen one.
Taxi from Istanbul Airport
Taxis at both air hubs are available at designated ranks in front of the terminal buildings (Arrivals Level) — follow the signage from the Arrivals to get to them. Local taxis are metered — they charge 5 lira as a starting fare and 3.10 lira for each kilometer traveled. Official cabs are painted yellow and have a TAKSI sign on top. Also, you can find blue and black cabs at the ranks — they’re more comfortable and thus more expensive.
The average cost of a yellow taxi to the central part of the city from New air hub is 150 lira or 19.10 euros, and from Sabiha Gokcen one — 180 lira or 23 euros.
Always be careful when taking a taxi, as you may easily come across a dishonest driver: make sure the driver turns on the meter, refuse if he offers you a fixed price (it’s usually much higher than a metered one), and prepare small bills so the driver can’t say he doesn’t have change. Also, be ready that local drivers tend to drive carelessly. If you don’t want to worry about all that and want to arrive at your destination relaxed, book a private transfer.
Public Transport from Istanbul Airport
The city is also accessible by buses. You can use airport express shuttles (18 lira) or city buses (5.20 lira) to get to different districts in the city. For instance, travel from both air hubs to the city center (Taksim Square) takes 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic. In most cases, you’ll need to buy an Istanbulkart to pay the fare (a card itself costs 10 lira) — you can get it from special kiosks or machines at the bus stops (note that yellow machines only take cash and don’t give change). The pick-up locations can be found near the terminals.
Public transport isn’t a good choice if you travel with children or have large suitcases: it can be crowded and hot, you’re most likely to make a change in the city (or reach your accommodation from the stop on foot), and you may have to wait for it for 20-30 mins (night services are even less frequent).
Booking a Transfer from Istanbul Airport
You can easily place your order on the Kiwitaxi website: just choose your pick-up and drop-off points, select the car class, and specify the date and time of your trip. If you want to make your trip more comfortable, you can add some extra services to your order (an extra stop on the route, a bottle of drinking water, etc). Also, you can make a prepayment with your debit/credit card.
Although the minimum booking time is 24 hours in advance, you can leave your request later and we’ll try to find an available driver for you.
