How to Get from Colombo to Other Destinations
Colombo is the largest city of Sri Lanka located on its western coast. It’s the commercial capital and the financial center of the island. Well-developed infrastructure, numerous extraordinary sights, and friendly local people make this place a popular tourist destination. Travelers leave Colombo by public transport or using a cab and transfer services.
Taxi from Colombo
Taxis are not numerous in Colombo, however, you can find one. You can call a car via phone yourself or ask your hotel to do that for you. Also, you can hire a taxi at the train station, bus terminals, close to large hotels, or through some travel agencies. Try to find a vehicle equipped with a taximeter - thus, your ride will be cheaper. On average, a journey to Bandaranaike Airport by taxi costs $19-22 (3,000 - 3,500 LKR) including highway toll charges. Its duration depends on the traffic and is usually about an hour. Taxi drivers often offer fixed prices or say they have no taximeter. If you don’t know the real fare to your destination, it’s better to refuse such a trip.
Transfer from Colombo
A transfer ordered with the Kiwitaxi company will be a good option in case you want to travel in a comfortable air-conditioned car (as some taxis in Colombo are rather old) and wish to reach your desired destination quickly. The fare to the airport for 4 passengers is $31. A transfer can be easily pre-booked online in just a few clicks. At the time appointed, you will be met by your driver. If you need to get to someplace at night, you can also do that using a transfer.
All routes from Colombo as well as transfer rates can be found on the site.
Public Transportation from Colombo
One can get from Colombo to its air hub by shuttle 187. There are two types of buses on this route - state (50 LKR or around $0.3) and private (150 LKR or around $1) ones (including vans). Sometimes, such a ride may take up to 2.5 hours (if a bus is not full enough, it might make some stops on the way to pick up other passengers).
From Fort railway station, one can go to many other locations in Sri Lanka. Thus, 2nd-class train travel to Galle costs 180 LKR (around $1.1), to Hikkaduwa - 160 LKR (around $1), and to Kandy - 190 LKR (around $1.2).
For night trips, we recommend you to pre-order a taxi or a transfer. Public transportation doesn’t run round the clock.
