Transfers vs. Public Transport and Taxi in Vilnius

Vilnius is the capital as well as the industrial and cultural center of Lithuania. Seven kilometers away from the city, there is Vilnius International Airport (Tarptautinis Vilniaus oro uostas) — the largest air hub in the country.

One can easily get from the capital to the neighboring cities of Druskininkai, Birstonas, Kaunas, and Trakai. Riga Airport can be reached by car in about 3.5 hours.

How to get from Vilnius city center to Vilnius Airport, train station, or neighboring cities

Tourists have five options to get to their destination:

  • by city buses. At daytime, you can reach the airport by buses № 1, 2, and 88 departing from Vilnius stations or by № 3G departing from the Old Town. The night bus № 88N departs from the city four times from 00:57 to 03:57;
  • by share taxis of the TOKS company. They also run to Vilnius air hub from the bus station;
  • by train. From the central train station, trains run regularly both to the airport (every 45 minutes–2 hours) and to the neighboring cities: Klaipeda, Kaunas, Trakai, Turmantas, and others;
  • by taxi. It can be ordered by phone or using a special app;
  • by transfer. It should be booked online in advance.

From the city bus station, one can also go to Riga, Minsk, Brest, and Kaliningrad.

If you’re going from the city to Trakai, for example, and then want to get back, it is better to decide beforehand how to get back to Vilnius after the excursion.

Transfer vs. Taxi in Vilnius ordered by phone or via the app

Advantages of a private transfer

The price won’t change, even if you get stuck in a traffic jam. Vilnius is full of traffic jams. And if you get into one traveling by taxi, the taximeter will keep working. As for transfer prices, they are always fixed.

You don’t have to spend your time waiting. Taxi apps have their own problems. At the time of choosing a car, they can tell you that the driver will arrive in a couple of minutes, and after you make your booking, it will turn out you’ll have to wait for 20–30 minutes more. A transfer is booked in advance, so a car will be waiting for you at the specified time.

Disadvantages of a private transfer

More expensive. A taxi trip to Vilnius Airport with UberX or Taxify will cost 3–8 euros, to Trakai — 13–27 euros, and to Kaunas — 50–75 euros. Trips with Kiwitaxi on the same routes will cost you 25, 38, and 79 euros respectively.

Transfer in Vilnius vs. Train, Bus, and Share Taxi

Advantages of a private transfer

Up to 8 times faster trip to the airport. Traveling to the airport by bus, share taxi, or train including waiting time may take up to 2 hours. With Kiwitaxi, you’ll reach the destination as early as in 15 minutes.

Travel up to 2 hours faster to Trakai and Kaunas. The way to these cities by train, bus, or transfer takes almost the same time: 50 minutes to Trakai and 1.5 hours to Kaunas. However, you can spend up to two hours more getting to train stations and waiting for transport. There is no need to wait for a transfer, which means, you’ll definitely reach your destination faster.

No changes on the way. The Kiwitaxi driver will meet you in the place which is most convenient for you, and you won’t have to get to the railway station first and then change to a bus or a train.

Disadvantages of a private transfer

Much more expensive even for a group. A train, bus, or share taxi fare to the airport is around 1 euro. A bus trip to Trakai will cost you 1.9 euros, and to Kaunas — 6–9 euros. A train will take you to these cities for 1.7 and 4.5–6.2 euros.

What is worth visiting in Vilnius?

First, tourists go to Gediminas’ Tower which observation point offers a great view of Vilnius’ Old Town and valleys of the Neris River.

Next to the tower, there is the Cathedral Square. Take a stroll from it to the Town Hall Square along the main street of the city — Pilies Street. Here, you will also find St. Michael’s Church and St. Anne’s Church.

An interesting exposition is presented in the Money Museum. By the way, the entrance to the museum is free. If you come to the city with children, don’t forget to visit the Toy Museum.
