Transfers vs. Other Ways to Get from Catania Fontanarossa Airport
Catania Fontanarossa Airport named after Vincenzo Bellini is the third busiest airport in Italy, receiving more than 6 million people a year. Your acquaintance with charismatic Sicily will start already when landing: the plane offers a great view of the active volcano Etna. Right from the airport, you can travel not only to Catania but also to Taormina, Letojanni, Palermo, Syracuse, and Giardini Naxos.
How to get from Catania Airport to Catania city center or the other way round
The airport is 7km away from Catania center, in the town of Fontanarossa. The trip is rather short, and there are three transport options to choose from:
- “Alibus” bus № 457. On weekdays, it departs every 20 minutes from 04:40 to 00:00 and goes to Catania Railway Station. The bus stop is located to the left of the terminal exit, near the taxi ranks. Tickets can be bought at the ticket offices at the airport, newsagents or from a driver;
- taxi, which you can take on the spot or order via the app;
- transfer, booked online in advance.
If your plane arrives at night, you will be able to get to the city only by taxi or transfer. By the way, trains to almost all towns of the island depart from Catania railway station.
Transfers vs. Taxi from Catania Airport (taken on the spot or ordered via the app)
Advantages of a private transfer
Website and support service in English. In Italy, you will have to manage without Uber: it is forbidden on the territory of the country. If it is not a problem for you to call a taxi in Italian, you can use “it Taxi” app. Afraid of making a mistake? Order a transfer.
No risk to face scammers. Taxi drivers may take advantage of the fact that you do not know Italian when you start asking why the trip costs so much. The perfect crime is to drive you circles and then pretend that address was given incorrectly. Kiwitaxi honestly informs you about the transfer price before the trip, and the driver will definitely drive you where you need to get to.
An individual transfer at the same price. A trip by taxi from Catania Airport to the city will cost 30–40 euro. A transfer will cost you 35 euro, and the driver will arrive earlier, meet you at the airport with a name sign, help you with your luggage, and tell you some facts about the city.
Transfers from Catania Airport vs. Bus
Advantages of a private transfer
Travel even at night. Alibus buses do not run from the airport to the city (and back) from the midnight to 4am. And Kiwitaxi transfer can be ordered for any time of a day.
No risk to get fined 50 euro. In Sicily, you can be fined for a free ride in public transport. If you forget to validate your ticket, you risk overpaying for your negligence.
Reach your hotel earlier. You will have to wait for Alibus bus for around 20 minutes, as much as the trip to the city itself. You can get to your destination twice as fast by transfer — while others are still getting on a bus, you will be already close to your hotel.
Only 2,75 euro more expensive for each tourist when travelling in a group of 4. A trip to Catania with one change in the city will cost 24 euro for 4 people. An economy class transfer from Catania Airport for the same number of passengers will cost 35 euro.
Disadvantage of a private transfer
More expensive if you travel alone or in a pair. For 4 euro, you will get to Catania from the airport and can make one change in the city.
