How to Get from Santorini Airport to Other Destinations
The international air hub (Thira) is located in the eastern part of the island, about 6 km away from its capital - the town of Fira. This air hub was opened in 1972 and became an international one only in 2005. A large number of tourists arriving on the picturesque island of Santorini wonder how to reach their destination from the airport. Among the travel options, they may use are local taxis, public transport, and pre-booked private transfers.
Taxi from Santorini Airport
Taxis are waiting close to the terminal. However, it may be quite difficult to find an available car (especially during the summer months when there is a great number of tourists coming here for their holidays). The area of the island, as well as its population, is rather small, and there are only several dozens of taxi cabs for the entire island. Also, be ready to wait in the blazing sun. As for fares, a trip around the island costs €20-25, however, some taxi drivers set higher prices (sometimes, even twice as high!).
Transfer from Santorini Airport
If long waiting and standing in the heat is not what you’d like to experience after arriving on the island, booking a taxi transfer with the Kiwitaxi service might be a good choice. If you choose this option, you’ll be guaranteed to get a car upon arrival. When your plane lands at Santorini Airport, the transfer driver will already be waiting for you there. A journey to Fira, Oia, Imerovigli, or Kamari costs €42 for an Economy-class vehicle. Minibus transfers will be perfect for larger groups. Your vehicle won’t be shared with other passengers so you can enjoy your calm and comfortable journey. For a return ride to the airport, you may order a return transfer at once.
Public Transportation from Santorini Airport
Buses are the only mode of public transport operating in this area. A trip to Fira costs €1.80. From the capital, you may take a bus to other Santorini resorts. Thus, a journey to Oia or Imerovigli will cost you €1.80 at daytime (at night, fares are higher). For other destinations as well as current timetables and prices, visit the carrier’s (KTEL) website.
Keep in mind that buses don’t run from Santorini Airport after 22:10. Taxis and pre-ordered transfers are the only option one may use to reach the desired destination.
Useful Information
Santorini Airport is not very large and doesn’t offer lots of services. Here, you may find several ATMs, duty-free shops, and cafes. In the departure area, one may find a jewelry shop.
