Heraklion Airport: Transfers and Taxi
Heraklion International Airport was named after the writer Nikos Kazantzakis and was built more than 70 years ago. From this airport the tourists arriving in Crete can travel further to Heraklion and the neighbouring resorts: Rethymno, Hersonissos, Malia, Gouves etc.
How to get from Heraklion Airport to the city center and the other way round
Heraklion Airport is located practically in the city (less than 4 km to the city center), so if desired and provided you have no luggage, you can get to the city on foot. However, if you plan to travel from Heraklion to other towns of Crete, use the following means of transport:
- buses of the Greek company KTEL. These are old buses with routes across the whole island;
- local taxis, reserved at the airport;
- transfer booked online in advance.
As Crete is a small island, there are no trains. Nor are there taxi services to be booked via a smartphone app. The locals can easily travel between towns by buses or even bicycles.
Transfer vs. Taxi from Heraklion Airport, called on site
Advantages of a private transfer
Fixed price. Taxi services on Crete are very vulnerable to petrol prices, which can double during the high season. Together with the petrol price rises the taxi trip cost. Cost of taxi from Heraklion Airport may be very high depending on many factors. Our transfers have a fixed fare: your transfer will cost as much as you paid online in advance.
Without extra commission. Pricing at Heraklion Airport is often difficult to grasp. Price for kilometre changes depending on the time of day, weight of luggage and number of passengers. Final cost of the ride is not clear and relies on your ability to make a deal with a taxi driver. In case of a transfer, you know the sum in advance.
Disadvantage of a private transfer
10–15% as expensive. Only in case you have got a fair taxi driver.
Transfer vs. Buses from Heraklion Airport
Advantages of a private transfer
Bus timetables are in Greek! If you plan to get easily from one of the two bus stations to the resort – get ready to learn Greek. Timetables at the bus station are only available in this language.
Travel with air-conditioner. Crete city buses are operated by the Greek company KTEL. Its car park is old, and many buses have no air conditioner. At a summer temperature of 29–32 degrees, you will sweat your shirts, while getting to the city. All our transfers have air conditioner and sometimes even climate control system.
Arrive at any time. Some buses go to the resorts only once a day. Arrived in the afternoon, but the bus had left in the morning? You will have to spend a night in Heraklion. The are no night buses at all, but our transfers from Heraklion Airport operate 24-Hours.
No queues in the sun. This is how a bus queue from the airport to Hersonissos and Malia looks like. Are you ready to wait? If no, book a transfer.
Disadvantage of a private transfer
4,5 times as expensive, when calculated for 2 passengers. For example, the two of you will get to Rethymno for €20, given the transport changes, whereas the transfer will cost you €86.
