Transfers vs. Other Ways to Get from Lyon-Saint-Exupéry International Airport
More than 9 million people a year use the international airport of Lyon. In 2000, it got the name of its famous resident, a writer and professional pilot, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. In winter season, there are shuttles from the airport to the most popular ski resorts (Annecy, Moutiers, Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and so on). From the city, you can reach neighboring Grenoble, Chambéry, and Swiss Geneva.
How to Get From Lyon Airport to Lyon City Center or the other way round
The distance between the airport and the city center is 25 km. You can travel by:
- tram. The Rhonexpress express runs from the airport to Lyon from 04:25 to 00:00. From 6 am to 9 pm, the interval is 15 minutes, and the rest of the time - 30 minutes. It reaches the central Part-Dieu train station in 30 minutes. On the way, it makes two stops, where it is convenient to change for the metro, bus or trolleybus;
- taxi. You can call a car by phone or via a mobile application, and also find it in the parking lot;
- transfer. You should book it on the site at least 16 hours before departure.
Important: earlier the city could also be reached by bus, but with the appearance of the express, it was abolished; you can get to Lyon by train only with a change in neighboring cities, and it is much longer and more expensive.
Transfer vs. Taxi from Lyon Airport to the City Center (taken on the spot or ordered via the app)
Advantages of a private transfer
Better service for the same money. A taxi ride to Lyon downtown costs about 55-60 euros, a transfer from the airport to city center is 62 euros, but Kiwitaxi organizes a meeting with the driver directly in the arrivals area, who helps you with the luggage and takes you to the car.
You do not need to order two cars for a group of four people. Under French law, a passenger is forbidden to sit in a taxi in the front seat, and two cars will cost about 110 euros or even more.
A fixed price, which is known in advance. The final cost of the Lyon taxi is influenced by many factors. In addition to the amount that the taximeter will show, you pay for a call to the taxi service, for the distance the driver drives to you, for each suitcase if you have more than one. Sometimes taxi drivers raise the price even because of the bad weather.
Transfer from Lyon Airport vs. Tram
Advantages of a private transfer
You can leave even after midnight. The tram in Lyon runs only until 00:00. The transfer service is available round the clock.
You'll get to the destination faster. Although the tram gets from the airport to the city in 30 minutes, you need to wait for it to depart (after 21.00 it can take up to half an hour). The transfer will take you where you need in 35 minutes.
No changes. The tram makes only three stops on the way. If your hotel is not near them, you will have to make a change to reach your final destination.
The price is the same for four people. The fare of a trip on the high-speed express is 15,90 euros. The standard Kiwitaxi car for four people costs 62 euros.
Traveling with 6 people is even cheaper. A minivan for 7 passengers in Kiwitaxi costs 80 euros. For each passenger, the fare will be 13 euros.
Disadvantage of a private transfer
You can get into the traffic jam, and the tram goes on the rails unhindered.
