Transfers vs. Public Transport and Taxi in Tallinn
Tallinn is the capital of Estonia, a large passenger and cargo seaport. It is also a political, scientific, economic, and cultural center of the country.
There is only one air hub serving the city — Lennart Meri International Airport (or Ülemiste lennujaam) which is located just 4 km away from Tallinn.
How to Get from Tallinn to the Airport, Train Station, or Neighboring Cities
There are three transport options tourists can choose from. One can get to or from Tallinn by:
- bus. There are buses № 2 and № 65 running to the airport from around 5 a.m. until midnight. If you’re departing from the city center or Tallinn bus station, take the bus № 2. The bus № 65 runs through the districts of Mustakivi, Priisle, Loopealse, and Ülemiste City;
- taxi. In Tallinn, one can order a car by phone or using a special app;
- transfer. It is booked via the Internet in advance.
Trains to large Estonian cities depart regularly from Tallinn Baltic train station. There are also buses of Sebe, Lux Express, Simple Express, and Ecolines companies operating on these routes.
Transfer vs. Taxi in Tallinn booked via the app
Advantages of a private transfer
You don’t spend your time waiting for a car which is especially important in case you are in a hurry to get to the airport or railway station.
Your driver will definitely come for you. A taxi app may look for a vehicle for a very long time or even tell you there are no available cars. When you book a transfer, you receive a voucher by email — it provides a 100% guarantee that your car will arrive.
You can choose the car class that suits you best. After the latest updates, Taxify has no more function of choosing a car. That means you cannot order, for example, a 7-seater minibus now. If you book with Kiwitaxi, you may choose the car class which is the most suitable for you in capacity, as well as order a child seat if necessary.
Disadvantage of a private transfer
Several times more expensive. The price for a taxi trip from Tallinn city center to the airport with Uber and Taxify will be 3–5 euros, while an official taxi will take you there for 10 euros. A Kiwitaxi private transfer costs from 26 euros.
Transfer in Tallinn vs. Bus
Advantages of a private transfer
You can travel at night. Buses in Tallinn don’t run after midnight, while transfers are available 24/7.
You won’t have to plan your route yourself. When booking a transfer, you just specify your pick-up and drop-off addresses, and the driver chooses the shortest route himself/herself. That is more comfortable than studying an unfamiliar map or planning transport changes.
Disadvantages of a private transfer
More expensive even in case you’re travelling in a group, as the price for one bus ticket is just 1.6 euros.
What is worth visiting in Tallinn?
The main tourist attraction in the capital of Estonia is Tallinn’s Old Town. Here, one can take a look at Toompea Castle which houses the Parliament of Estonia, as well as Pikk Hermann tower — one of the most recognizable symbols of the country.
Also, one should definitely visit a unique architectural monument — the Tallinn Town Hall. It is the only town hall in the whole of the northern Europe which hasn’t changed its gothic appearance since the 15th century.
The highest building in the city is the Tallinn TV Tower (314 meters). One can walk on the edge of the tower with belay for 20 euros and climb down with a rope — for 49 euros.
