Punta Cana Airport: Transfers and Taxi
Punta Cana is a magnificent resort in the Dominican Republic. This holiday destination is rightfully considered the best in the country. Those who are keen on exotic pleasures will enjoy its beaches with clean and white sand, coconut palms, and a variety of bright colors. One can get to Punta Cana or from it to neighboring cities by public transport, transfer, or a taxi service.
Taxi from Punta Cana
Taxis in the Dominican Republic are rather expensive. Ranks can be found near hotels in tourist areas. Even if you are used to taximeters in cars, you can forget about them when being in the Dominican Republic. The fare is fixed, and you will learn it either from the driver or from the hotel guide. But if you’d like to calculate the estimated taxi rate, for example, from Punta Cana to the airport or Bavaro, keep in mind that one minute of travel time costs one dollar. However, you can bargain with the driver, but everything will depend upon luck — sometimes, the price may be decreased by 50%!
Taxis in Punta Cana can be caught on the streets or booked by phone or via the Internet.
Transfer from Punta Cana
If you don’t wish to figure out the peculiarities of taxis in the Dominican Republic, it is better to book a transfer with Kiwitaxi.
The main advantage of this service is that you get a comfortable and serviceable car with a polite and attentive driver in advance. Kiwitaxi prices can always be found on the website, and they won’t be a surprise for you. Thus, a private transfer from Punta Cana to the airport will cost you from 45 dollars and will take you 10–40 minutes. A trip on the route Punta Cana — Bavaro will cost 46 dollars. The cost of a trip to Samana will be from 372 dollars, and to Boca Chica — around 158 dollars. The journey cost depends on the chosen car class. Besides these destinations, you can also order a car to Santo Domingo, La Romana, and other popular locations.
It is quite easy to book a transfer from Punta Cana with the Kiwitaxi service. You just need to fill in a special form.
Public transport from Punta Cana
Travel by public transport will be 20 (!) times cheaper than that by taxi or transfer. However, you should be ready to communicate with local people a lot.
There is a special bus running from the airport to the resort. But it rarely follows the timetable, so you may wait for its departure from 30 minutes to one hour. But if you get on the bus, get ready to announce your stop loudly and precisely, otherwise, you may be taken to another place. Travel from Punta Cana to the airport will cost around 20 dollars.
Public transport in Punta Cana includes:
— small buses called guaguas. As a rule, the ticket costs 0.3–0.6 dollars.
— carro publico. This is a light vehicle which follows the same route as guaguas. Passengers in this car are seated the following way: two people sit in the front seat, and four people — in the back seat. Don’t want to travel with other passengers? Just pay for free seats. The fare for one passenger will be 0.4 dollars.
— comfortable and spacious intercity buses. These buses are equipped with air-conditioning, and sometimes you can even feel cold there, so it is better to take a warm sweater or a blanket with you. These vehicles also have WC and TV. Depending on the distance, the trip will cost you from 1.5 to 8.4 dollars.
— mototaxis. This is a dangerous but cheap mode of transport which costs from 0.3 dollars.
