How to Get from Sihanoukville to the Airport and Other Destinations
Visiting Cambodia, travelers search for information about local transportation options. This article will give you some hints on how to get from Sihanoukville to the airport and neighboring places.
Taxi from Sihanoukville
Taxi in Sihanoukville is a regular 5-seater car with little luggage space. The air hub is in 20 minutes drive from the town, and a taxi from Sihanoukville to airport costs about $20. In case of a bigger company, you'd better book a minivan for $25. Remember to make a reservation beforehand: 3 hours in advance will be fine. If your flight is from Phnom Penh Airport, be ready to pay around $150 for a taxi trip.
There is also a cheaper option of a shared taxi. It is a regular 5-seater car holding 7 passengers and a driver. To get to Phnom Penh city, you’ll pay around $7-$10 for a seat, and the front one will cost a bit more.
Tuk-tuks are a kind of local curiosity, but we don’t recommend using their service: besides their trips are totally unsafe, drivers often try to overcharge passengers.
Transfers from Sihanoukville
If you prefer to organize a trip in advance to stay sure that everything will be fine, choose a private transfer. At Kiwitaxi transfer company, you book a car online, specifying a vehicle type, a number of passengers, exact time and place. The transfer driver will meet you at the agreed pick-up point and safely bring to the destination. The only drawback of a transfer is its price going together with the level of comfort it provides.
Public transport from Sihanoukville
There are various buses cruising between Sihanoukville and Cambodia's capital. A big one holds 50 people and ranges from $4-$6 on average. Minibuses with 15 seats seem to be more comfortable for $8-$10 one way. The traffic in and around Phnom Penh is quite busy, so the trip can take from 4 to 6 hours. Minibuses cruise even to Bangkok: a ticket costs about $30 and the whole trip lasts 12 hours.
If you need to reach Koh Kong, you can take a regular bus for $8, and a journey to Siem Reap costs from $15. There are only 2 destinations local rail transport goes to. Trains depart from Sihanoukville railway station to Phnom Penh and Kampot, offering tickets for $7 and $4 correspondingly.
For three or fewer people, a good option may be a bus shuttle from Sihanoukville to the air hub. You can make a reservation for tickets at most local guesthouses and travel agents.
About the town
Sihanoukville being the largest seaside town in Cambodia attracts tourists with its wonderful beaches and loud casinos. The town offering 5 beaches and 3 islands provides a counterpart to Thailand’s sometimes overcrowded beaches.
