Chiang Mai
Thailand

Chiang Mai is the cultural capital of Thailand. This ancient city gives home to more than 300 Buddhist temples. One of the most famous of them is Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep. Besides, there is the country’s biggest university in Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai has also the international airport. Many tourists arrive here in order to travel to neighboring towns, for example, Pai, where the only transport hub is a small airport designed only for light aircrafts.

In the Airguides, we accumulated all the most useful information from blogs and forums which will let you choose the optimal way to get to your destination. To save your time, we compared distances, travel time, and prices for each of the possible transport types on the route.

Transport timetable in Chiang Mai

Bus connection between Chiang Mai and other Thai towns is the most developed. Buses, especially route taxis, run quite often. The railway connects Chiang Mai only with Bangkok. Trains go in this direction only five times a day. Within the city of Chiang Mai, you can always travel by songthaew or motoriksha, which is however pretty dangerous. If you did decide to have a ride in this unusual public transport, try to use it only for short distances.

How to choose the transport from Chiang Mai to other Thai cities?

To take a decision, you need to answer the following questions:

  • what do you prefer: comfort or economy? Traveling with small children or elderly people normally requires comfort, so it is better to choose a taxi. If you are traveling light, in a pair, and have no health problems, a trip by bus will let you not only save money but also see the everyday life of the locals;
  • how bulky is your baggage? If you have a lot of suitcases or some non-standard baggage, imagine how difficult it will be to search for a transport stop carrying it, especially in such a hot and humid country as Thailand;
  • how late are you arriving? After 19:00, it will be impossible to travel from Chiang Mai by public transport, so the only options left will be booking a taxi or transfer.
